    • Cannot find any census data after 1861. He joined the Merchant Navy 14/4/1870, aged 16 (ship "Italy") but deserted when at New York 19/4/1871.

      He appears in the following US Censuses:-
      1880, 405, Wilson St., Erie, Penns. aged 26, occ "Laborer", married to Mary from Germany, and Charles aged 1
      1900, 635, Six St., Erie, Pens, aged 46, marrried 23 years, arrived 1872, occ "Foreman", with Mary, Charles, Mary (20), John (17), Lillie (16), Ethel (1)
      1910, same address, occ "Superintendent", at a Rubberworks
      1920, as for 1910.

      He appears to be in the UK for visits.

      Most internet evidence seems to say Mary died in Penns. 1924
