Notes - William married Anna Maria GAZE (born about 1825 in Norfolk) 28 Sep 1855 in Portslade, Brighton. She died Oct qtr 1862 and is buried in Steyning district. At the 1861 Census, there is a nurse staying and there are no children. Anna's sister Jane is also there. The census returns suggest Jane was born in Norfolk around 1828. Jane and William get married 12 Jan 1864 in Swansea. William is a widower and Jane is a spinster. William describes himself as a Master Mariner. All correct. It is not clear why they married in Swansea.
In the electoral roll of 1861 for Trunch in Norfolk, William is recorded as Skyles William. It says he owns the freehold of a house "at the back of the church". Presumably this is in Back St., behind St Botolphs church. Brother Robert also has a house nearby.
They move back to Norfolk, possibly associated with the death of his father Skyles. At the 1871 Census, the family is next door to his brother Robert.
Note - there is another William Skyles Juniper, son of Robert, his cousin. This other William marries Jane Lea (who came from Kent) in 1870. So there are two families with William Skyles and Jane Juniper. Fortunately these are younger (born circa 1845 and 1848 approx).
Probate was not granted till 21 Nov 1904, more than 5 years later. Elizabeth Juniper was the recipient of £358 - not a pittance, but maybe not a huge amount, given that the family appears to have been relatively well off. I wonder if there was a family dispute about who would receive the money. I do not know which Elizabeth this is, but he does have a daughter Elizabeth. The probate says "spinster", but I have not yet discovered if his daughter married or not. When his wife Jane died 20 June 1900, probate was not given until 16 Apr 1907, again to Elizabeth.
