- Whilst the evidence for William emigrating to Australia is circumstantial and is predicated on the name being present in Australia and not in the UK in the latter part of his life, travel documents, names of his parents and the relatively unusual name, it nevertheless seems the most likely option and so is included in the data here. I have not found any evidence for his sailing from the UK to Australia.
This story is popular on the internet, though there is no further evidence on the sites and trees I have seen.
So in addition to the data above, the following elements of the story are considered likely....
He travelled from London on the Glamis leaving 2/3/1878 from London and landed at Maryborough in Queensland 30/5/1878.
He married Sarah SALISBURY at Petersham in 1885
The will information (he died intestate) says that he was an engineer, and in Gulgong. There is a William Vey at ?Lagoon Paddock? in Gulong in the 1891 New South Wales census, but this gives little other information of value or corroboration of the story.
He appears to have died in Newtown, NSW, close to Rookwood where he was buried Both are close to Petersham where he married. They are circa 150 miles from Gulgong, so he was probably working away from his wife and home, The burial transcript says he was an Old Wesley christian.
The burial transcript implies he died on his 36th birthday, however there is probably an error in the transcript. Internet trees suggest he was born 29 Jul 1856 and although there is no evidence for this, it is consistent with the BMD index.
