  • Notes
    • Marries Hannah Maria POTTS 1/9/1884 Prestbury Parish Church. Hannah was daughter of Henry James (born abt 1818) and Maria (born abt 1827). Henry was previously married to Sarah, as evidenced from the 1851 Census, and from their marriage (7/5/1843), Henry's father was Richard. I have not tracked any further back and so I have yet to find a connection with these members of the Potts family and ours, but there is sure to be one not too far back.

Richard appears in the Macclesfield Times on 15 Nov 1935 recalling his 65 years as a silk weaver......
      ************************************
Industry has many instances of long service, but few approach that of Mr. Richard Potts, of 190 Crompton Road, Macclesfield, who has been a weaver for 65 years.
For most of that period he has been a handloom weaver in the silk trade and at 75 years of age still follows his occupation on the treadle machine on which are productuced cloths which no power loom has yet equalled.
Mr Potts is now employed by Messrs. Carwritght and Sheldone Ltd., but he has worked in most of the local silk mills. He was weaving long before there were Government regulations relating to the hours or rates of pay, such as there are today. He learned the trade as a boy in a garret at his home, where there were 17 children beside himself.
He is a "Buff" and keenly interested in music. Last year he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding.
