Notes - The details of his life after 1861 are not definite, but highly likely, and on that basis his dates and places of death and burial have been added.
There is a marriage to Maggie McNAB 19/2/1879, in Aberfeldy, but nothing obvious on the transcript to indicate parents etc, and thus nothing to confirm this is our James.
They appear in the Censuses of 1881, 1891 and 1901, with James quoting his age and place of birth correctly. He is variously a "Grocer and Wine Merchant", "Grocer", "Grocer".
In the Probate registry, he is described as "Laundryman", but it does name Margaret as his wife, and Peter, his son (and there is a Peter in 1891), and then the gravestone has his death the same as the Probate registry, with the correct age.
If so, he dies at "Novar". In 2025, there is a B and B called "Novar" on Home Street (the road given in the Probate register). The only uncertainty is that in the 1919-20 "Leslie's Directory of Scotland", he appears as providing a "Steam Laundry". I assume this is probably Maggie, who did not die until 1920 (at the age of 70), but possibly his son James (b circa1887).
