  • Notes
    • Probate registry says that his home address (and presumably that of his widow, Lily) was 7, Bayswater Terrace, St Albans Rd, Skergoat Green, Halifax.

I have yet to locate his military record, but both the probate registry and the CWGC says he was a Captain (Quartermaster) in the West Yorkshire (Duke of Wellington) Regiment. When he gets married in 1904, he is a "Colour Sargeant" at "the Barracks".

His obituary in the local paper says that he joined the 2nd Btn, Duke of Wellington Regiment in 1897, and went to "America, South Africa and India". He was in Rangoon during the Boer War, equiping the mounted infantry. He was then "invalided home", joining the Halifax Barracks as a Quartermaster. This is where he is at the 1911 Census, although his army position is not recorded. Both the local paper and the London Gazette of 21/5/1911 notes that he moved from the 3rd Btn as a Quartermaster- Seargeant to the 4th Btn as a Quatermaster-Lieutenant. (note this move was 24 March, ie before the 1911 Census). Obviously at some stage he was then further promoted to Captain. The local paper also says went to France but was injured after 18 months, following which he joined the Leicester Regiment at various locations in the UK. He "retired" after "21 years" ie in 1918, and died from Pneumonia following flu.

The CWGC also says "Mentioned in Dispatches".

Lastly, the CWGC gives his name as F Thomas Fielding. It is clearly the same person, but it is not clear what the "F" is for.
