Notes |
- The family notes about these people are unclear, and there appear to be two options. Option 2 is probably more likely....
Opt 1 - Reputed to have a brother William, who was a Cambridge Wrangler.
Opt 2 - She had a brother, whose son William was a Cambridge Wrangler (and maybe died there). These 2 had a father buried at Lintraethen and an aunt (who married ?Robert? HANTON), a school teacher in Lintraethen.
There is no obvious way of identifying Cambridge Wranglers (ie those people who got a 1st in Maths), only the Senior Wranglers (top 1st) are widely available.
Looking at possible people in Cambridge in 1841, the only possibility would appear to be William ?CRICK? who is described as M. S. (I think Male Student, certainly in a place with lots of surnames), not from Cambridgeshire. His age is given as 20-25. (In passing there are both male and female students at this address). He does not appear to be in the Cambridge area in 1851 and 1851, and the only suitable names in Forfarshire do not have jobs consistent with getting a 1st in Maths.
Robert HANTON appears in the records, and the Monumental Inscription and the death notice in the paper are clear that he was a much respected Schoolteacher in Lintraethen, who died 20/3/1860 aged 66. The 1841 Census suggests he had a son born around 1826, and so probably married between 1810 and 1825. It seems unlikely that Mary's father had an aunt who would have married Robert. But it is possible that Mary's sister married Robert? Note that Roberts MI does not mention a wife or children. There is a niece, Esther HOW(E), unmarried, born around 1809 with him in 1841 and 1851. Maybe the story has been confused, and it is about Mary being the aunt of a housekeeper of a housekeeper to a much loved schoolmaster - Esther's occupation given in 1851.
Either way this is where the trail stops. I can find no sensible birth record for Thomas, assuming he is Robert's son, the only possible marriage is in Dundee in 1817 to Ann RAMSEY, where Robert is described as a plumber.
Note that the Montrose Review of 1/10/1897 sings the praises of a Robert Hanton, born in 1829, educated at Lintrathaen, teaching at Cranston parish school, who was elected a Fellow of the Educational Institute of Scotland.
An additional complication is that there are 2 possible birth records for Mary Craik - baptised 2/5/1815 and 2/5/1816 to Alexander and Isobel (Mitchell). In both cases the address is given as Craigyloch, Bridgend of Linrathen. So there is either a transcription problem, or the first Mary died, and for whatever reason they chose to have the baptism on the same day. Either way, there is a William baptised 23/12/1823 to the same parents and same address.
Still more difficulty comes from a marriage between a Mary Craik and David Milne at Bridgend of Linrathen on 13/6/1840.
More work is required to understand which elements of the above, if any, apply to this family
