Walk mills used to wash the newly made cloth to prevent shrinkage, and then have people to walk on it to squeeze out the water. Notes - There are two very similar death notices - Whitslade and Whitslaid. There does appear to have been a farm called Whitslade near Hawick, (though nearer to Ashkirk), It seems that the farm was originally called Whitslaid, and so this spelling is used.
