Notes - Parents are Thomas and Ellen.
Thomas and Ellen were, according to the 1861 Census, from Milton in Kent - this may be relevant in terms of the comments below. In 1861 Thomas's occupation is "Sargeant .......Police", but it it not obvious. When she gets married in 1889 he is a School Board Governor.
I cannot see him in 1871 but in 1881, he had remarried (Ellen had died) and he is a clerk.
There is a Metropolitan Police record stating that he resigned 10/12/1870 because of "bodily injury" - and his parents seem to match other information about him. This again says he was born in Milton.
Ellen says (or John believes) at the 1911 Census that she was born in Greenwich, maybe because of her parents birthplace. It is also the point at which John seems to stop being a grocer and then a coopers labourer, which might be seen as inferior. However I think the birthplace is a genuine mistake and we are dealing with the same person through all the Censuses.
- Parents are Thomas and Ellen.
