      Death Takes James Reach

Superintendent of Earhart Estate Widely Known As Authority On Flowers

James Reach, 45 years old, superintendent of The Meadows, the Harry B. Earhart estate on the Geddes Rd., and widely known horticulturist, died last night in University hospital, after an illness of a week.

Mr. Reach was nationally known as an authority on flowers and was selected as judge for the New York flower show each year in addition to serving at other flower shows throughout the country.

      Judge At Show Here
He had an active interest in the Ann Arbor Flower show for which he also served as judge. His specialties were tulips and roses and he devoted considerable time to the development of species of these flowers.

In his position at The Meadows, he supervised the development of the large acreage composing the estate. He came to Ann Arbor 11 years ago from Sewickly, Pa., where he was superintendent of the Edward A. Woods estate. Previously he was employed on Long Island.

Mr. Reach had an extensive war record. He served four and a half years with the British army in Egypt and had the rank of sergeant. He was wounded twice. Wounded in the Sahara desert, he was in a hospital in a small community when the hospital was bombed and he again was wounded.

He was born Sept. 26, 1893, in Scotland, and graduated from an agricultural college there. He was in business as a florist in Scotland before coming to this country about 15 years ago. He was married 16 years ago in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Minnie Smith.

      Mason In Scotland
Mr. Reach was a member of the Masonic order in Scotland, and of the Elks lodge, Kiwanis club and Barton Hills Country club in Ann Arbor.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Ian, at home; a sister, Miss Esther Reach, Long Island, N. Y., and three sisters in Scotland.

Funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Muehlig chapel where friends may call. Dr. Charles W. Brashares will officiate. Burial will be in the cemetery on the Earhart estate.

Pallbearers at the chapel will be Raymond Hutzel, John Wesch, A. L. McDonald, Harold Winkler, Ralph Meanwell and M. J. McCarthy. Serving at the cemetery will be Harry B. Earhart, his son, Richard Earhart, and Leonard Kirsch, Warren Sherman, Reed Soper and Edward Achwandt.

The Reach family resides in a house on the Earhart estate.
