• Notes

  At her marriage she says her father is George MERRINGTON (or says her father is George)... ie George GARNER? - his occupation given as Gardener. She is baptised as Kate GARNER, and George is given as the father, albeit this is before the marriage and Ann is still a MERRINGTON. There is a margin note to say "Illig" The school records say that "Kate Merrington seems quite incapable of doing her classwork, in spite of extra teaching" (26/7/1886). She started at Boxmoor infants 19/2/1883 and only her mother, Annie is mentioned. She left 28/5/1888. Kate's literacy seems poor in the 1921 Census, though her writing seems reasonable. However the address was filled in by the enumerator, not her.
