Edward Morris Roberts, age 85, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2008, surrounded by his family. Born August 24, 1922 in Wind Gap, he was a son of the late Robert and Kathleen Ann Morris Roberts. Edward married his wife, the former Mildred Mann, on December 31, 1946. They celebrated 61 years of marriage last December.
Ed was a member of Hope United Church of Christ in Wind Gap, where he served on many committees and served as deacon. He also sang in the church choir for many years.
Ed served in the Army Air Corp Infantry #13 during World War II.
He retired from Hercules Cement in 1980.
Ed was a member of Masonic Lodge #594 of Pen Argyl, the American Legion of Pen Argyl, in addition to Brothers in Harmony. In his early years he was a member of a barbershop quartet and sang with the Elk's in Bangor. He was a Boy Scout Master for pack #48, and a color guard with the original Wind Gap Blue Eagles drum corp. He was one of the original "Potbellies" that organized during the Wind Gap Bi-Centennial. He was also crowned "King of Wind Gap", and is still the reigning King.
He loved going camping with his family when they were young, and when his children grew up, he and his wife Millie loved taking trips with their friends. He was a very proud husband, father, Taid (Welsh for grand and great grandfather), uncle and friend to many. Ed's family and friends meant everything to him. He would do anything for anyone, and will be sadly missed by all.
In addition to his wife Mildred, Ed is survived by two sons; Glenn and his wife Jane of Shoemakersville, and Barry and his wife Faith of Lancaster; two daughters, Marian Pados and her husband Robert of Plainfield Township with whom Ed resided, and Beverly McDowell and her companion Jay Reihl of Bernville; ten grandchildren and their families which include five great grandsons, and one great granddaughter; a niece and nephew and their families. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Roberts; four sisters, Mary Weaver, Rita Longhnore, Elsie Reppert and Peggy Wray, and a brother and sister who died in infancy.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 18 at 12:00 p.m. in Hope United Church of Christ, 701 Cherry Street, Wind Gap. Relatives and friends are invited to call Thursday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 pm in the church, also Friday morning from 11:00 a.m. until time of service in the church. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in Wind Gap Cemetery, Wind Gap.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Edward's memory may be sent to Hope UCC, Box 425, 701 Cherry Street, Wind Gap, Pa. 18091.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Schmidt Funeral Home, P.C., 202 West Street, Wind Gap.
