  At his baptism, the family were at 13, Middle Britain St, New Brompton He joined the 4th Devonshire regiment on 2/6/1885 (age given as 17y 0m, born Chatham), (living in St Denis, in Exeter at the time), having been a draper's assistant. The medical details record that he was 5ft 8.25in, chest measurement 33in, fair, blue eyes and brown hair, with a mole on his left groin. The 1911 Census with the birthplaces of his children identify that he served in Egypt and India. The London Gazette of 24/7/1915 notes that "Serjeant-Major Abraham Vey Dennis to be Quartermaster, with the honorary rank of Lieutenant. Dated 25th July, 1915." He is now in the 6th Btn, Devonshire Regiment. At some later point (?1921?) he is a Captain.
