Notes - Internet sites state that Joseph was son of Job, and whilst Shenton is a common local name there is evidence to say that is the case.
1. In the Censuses he is clear he comes from Kidsgrove. He is also clear about his age, so there is a high degree of likelihood that he was born 1840/41.
2. There are only 2 such records in the BMD - either Stoke or Newcastle. Newcastle includes Audley (and thus Kidsgrove).
3. In the 1841 Census, when he is recorded as 1, they are living at Hardings Wood, Talk(e), Kidsgrove.
4. In 1841, 1851 and 1861, his father Job (a coal miner), is to other records a Primitive Methodist preacher, so they were clearly a devout family, and it is unsurprising that Joseph becomes a minister.
Staffordshire birth transcripts indicate that his mother's maiden name was SCOTT. Putting this with the information above is consistent:-
Job is baptised 28/11/1810 in Cheadle
Job marries Mary 5/6/1830 in Cheadle St Giles, and then as a widower marries Sophia BERETON 31/12/1849 in Biddulph. Job is then buried in Biddulph 29/10/1863, aged 52.
This gives confidence to the early data presented for Joseph.
Local newspapers record Joseph as a minister in the Primative Methodist Church as follows:-
In or before 1869 he was in Lichfield, one of whose members was appointed to Birmingham in 1927, having taken examinations to enter ministerial college and started as a minister in 1869.
Jun 1889 - At the PM conference in Bradford, ?being appointed to? West Bromwich
Oct 1891 - at West Bromwich as part of the West Midland district, taking part as part of a literary discussion
Jun 1898 - in the Ludlow Circuit, and appointed by the PM Conference to be a District Ministerial Candidate Examiner
Jul 1917 and also 1920 - appointed as a Supernumary Minister in the Dudley Circuit
Jul 1921 - at Sedgley in the Dudley Circuit
May 1927 - in Coventry for the year 1927-8, as a Supernumary
Local papers also record where he preached at special services. For instance:-
Feb 1903, at Welllington (Shropshire), an "eloquent" address as part of a Missionary event. He is stated as being from Dudley
Nov 1897, at Web (Shropshire), both preaching and an "eloquent address...on the claims of the villages, the industrial centres, and Africa". He is stated as formerly from Wem, now Ludlow.
Feb 1894, at Illogan, Cornwall, at a "home, colonial and foreign" missionary service, a "stirring speech"
May 1876, at Knutton, Staffordshire, at a Sunday School service. He is stated as coming from Stafford.
There is also a reference to Rev Joseph Shenton preaching at an anniversary service at St Pauls Congregational Church, Cardiff in Sept 1895. However this seems less likely given that this is a different Christian denomination.
He wrote and had published essays and pamphlets. I have identified:-
"Religion - No fable!" in 1874
"How Rookie was saved" in 1892
"Old Bodkins" in 1892
I suspect there were many more.
