  • Notes
    • His naval records state that he was 5' 7" with brown hair, grey eyes and a fair complexion. First went to sea in 1840 and by 10 June 1846 had spent 4yrs 8 months in the Royal Navy. His home was given as Weymouth. These records give his DOB as 1825. However the later CG records say 1826, and this is picked as more likely to be the case, given his baptism.

Further records give his career as follows:-
28/8/1841 aged 17 - HMS Warspite - to 22/4/1846. Not sure what happened between this and the date of 10/6/1846 above
      Coastguard 22/4/1846 to 10/2/1854
      HMS Blenheim 10/2/1854 to 30/4/1856
      Coastguard thereafter.

From 1854 to 1856 it is almost certain that Charles had rejoined, or been called up to help with the Crimean War. The website www.pdavis.nl has much useful information including the following:-

HMS Blenheim was a steam powered, originally launched as a sailing ship and converted to steam by 1847. On 6 Mar 1854, it alongside a considerable flotilla, mustered at Spithhead (Portsmouth) to sail to the Baltic. This was part of a campaign to ensure that no Russian ships made it to Denmark, Sweeden and the North Sea, and to blockade St Petersburg etc from imports. However as far as I can see, this campaign was through by 1855, and I am not sure what the ship did thereafter.

Later records for service with the coast guard has him working on "?Hector? (CG), Brighton" from 1 Jan 1873 to 22 Aug 1876. It also notes a burn on his right elbow, so perhaps something that happened after 1840.

Internet sites have a copy of a death certificate saying he died 1/12/1907 at Preston, Brighton.
