  • Notes
    • One of the witnesses to the marriage is Mary Jane Juniper, her (unmarried) sister. At the 1901 Census, there was Bertha Cogger, servant.

At the 1939 Register they are at 79 Woodmansterne Road, ie with Elsie and Beth. Perhaps they lived there during the WW2. The register does not record anybody at No 26.

With regard to the note on the 1911 Census that there are 2 children who have died, there are no family memories that I can find. So I have just done some brute force searching as follows:
      *******************************************
List of HULL births with mother maiden name JUNIPER registered from 1887 to 1911 on GRO website. (Used with "similar to" settings for both surnames).

      Note M - March, ie Q1, J - June, ie Q2, D - Dec, ie Q4

Samuel dies in Edmonton, Q1, 1890 aged 0. Vol 3a, p168. But Edmonton is a distance (physical and cultural) from Barnet

The only child registered as Hull in Barnet between Q4, 1889 and Q2, 1911 inclusive other than Elsie Muriel, but with no mother maiden name on FMP is:-
Kathleen Marjorie Hull Oct qtr 1896. GRO site has mother maiden name as COOPER

With a 5 mile radius, which includes on FMP Edmonton and Hendon:-
Alfred Samuel C (Q3 1903, Hendon) GRO site has mother maiden name as LOVELL

There are no HULLs registered in Portsmouth or Portsea from 1899 to 1901 with no maiden name given.

I have checked all the HULLs and HULL variations on GRO, looking for any similarities in mother maiden name to Juniper for
      Barnet 1889 to 1911
      Edmonton 1889 to 1901.
No suitable alternatives have been found.

No deaths of these Hulls found in this period in Hertfordshire or Hampshire, nor any Hull variants in Barnet.

Note Leonard HALL (Q1 1900, Barnet) has been suggested on another family tree site, but the transcription gives mother maiden name as Brewer, so this seems unlikely

Note Elsie Muriel registered Jan qtr 1898

My theory is that there was a stillborn. My understanding is that they were registered, though I imagine that this did not always happen, albeit that we have Samuel who died very young. Perhaps this happened some years before 1911, and FW felt the need to record his other children in some way. My grandmother Elsie clearly had no knowledge, so we have to assume that the child died before she was say 6, so not after 1904. Matching this with Census etc, it means somebody born and dieing in Barnet 1901 to 1904. Alternatively somebody born in Portsmouth from 1890 onwards (we dont know when they moved to Barnet), or Barnet and dieing before 1901. It might be that the loss of children was the reason for moving to Barnet. Lastly a more remote possibility that there was a stillborn while Elsie was at boarding school, but even if not present for that, she surely would have noticed her mother being pregnant.
