601 Note:- Reigate Foreign was the small collection of houses outside the borough and this is now Redhill Source (S1597)

602 noted as "Base-born" COOMBE, Henry (I843)

603 Of the assumed children here, only John has a mother mentioned ("Johane", assumed to be our Joan). But there are no other Jackmans born to an Alexander between 1710 and 1750, within 5 miles of South Tawton and all those who are baptised have fathers who are not called Alexander. Family: Alexander JACKMAN / Joan PIDLAR (F288)

604 On his son Richard's baptism in 1732, he is described as "William Moore Senr" MOORE, William (I848)

605 On the 1881 Census, the surname is recorded "HACKMAN". Perhaps John had a cold that day?

There is also an "Elizabeth", domestic servant b Wiltshire in about 1837. No obvious relative, but it seems that it most probably would be
Family: John JACKMAN / Ann MAYNARD (F315)

606 One internet source has birth 26/7/1854,
The 1881 Census location appears to have a lot of Royal Engineers billeted there, presumably this is why Jessie and the children were too.
Note also that her sister Laura was in Brington in 1881, this is where she married Arthur Ling in 1884

Jessie Ling is mentioned on her mother's burial documents, and was living at 140 Fetter Lane at the time (1889)
ELLIS, Jessie (I731)

607 One internet source has birth 6/12/1851
The burial records indicate that her brother in law Arthur Ling was involved (and hence is proof of the correct details).

Laura was clearly a resident at the Royal Cambridge Care Home when she died. It is assumed this is the same as the Cambridge Asylum [aka "refuge2"] for Soldiers Widows. Soldiers were privates and non comissioned officers. Soldiers widows had to be elected to the home, but both the widow and the soldier had to be of good character.
ELLIS, Laura (I803)

608 One internet source has wedding 27 Sep 1815, aged 30 and died St Pancras 15/3/1865 JACKMAN, Arthur (I779)

609 One of the witnesses is Samuel Cooke - this supports the theory that Mary, her mother remarried. Family: Joseph THOMPSON / Mary JUNIPER (F356)

610 One of the witnesses to the marriage is Mary Jane Juniper, her (unmarried) sister. At the 1901 Census, there was Bertha Cogger, servant.

At the 1939 Register they are at 79 Woodmansterne Road, ie with Elsie and Beth. Perhaps they lived there during the WW2. The register does not record anybody at No 26.

With regard to the note on the 1911 Census that there are 2 children who have died, there are no family memories that I can find. So I have just done some brute force searching as follows:
*******************************************

There are no HULLs registered in Portsmouth or Portsea from 1899 to 1901 with no maiden name given.

I have checked all the HULLs and HULL variations on GRO, looking for any similarities in mother maiden name to Juniper for
Barnet 1889 to 1911
Edmonton 1889 to 1901.
No suitable alternatives have been found.

No deaths of these Hulls found in this period in Hertfordshire or Hampshire, nor any Hull variants in Barnet.

Note Leonard HALL (Q1 1900, Barnet) has been suggested on another family tree site, but the transcription gives mother maiden name as Brewer, so this seems unlikely

Note Elsie Muriel registered Jan qtr 1898

My theory is that there was a stillborn. My understanding is that they were registered, though I imagine that this did not always happen, albeit that we have Samuel who died very young. Perhaps this happened some years before 1911, and FW felt the need to record his other children in some way. My grandmother Elsie clearly had no knowledge, so we have to assume that the child died before she was say 6, so not after 1904. Matching this with Census etc, it means somebody born and dieing in Barnet 1901 to 1904. Alternatively somebody born in Portsmouth from 1890 onwards (we dont know when they moved to Barnet), or Barnet and dieing before 1901. It might be that the loss of children was the reason for moving to Barnet. Lastly a more remote possibility that there was a stillborn while Elsie was at boarding school, but even if not present for that, she surely would have noticed her mother being pregnant.
Family: Frederick William HULL / Ellen Jones JUNIPER (F332)

611 One of the witnesses to the marriage is Mathew Randall, but there does not seem to be an obvious baptism of Mathew to her parents. RANDALL, Jane (I1073)

612 One of the witnesses to the marriage was her cousin Edith May ALLEN.

The Electoral registers for 1929 give her with Alfred William LATHAM at 71, Surrey Sq, Alvey St, Southwark; and at 55, Fabian Rd, Fulham in 1947 and in 1949

Philip possibly born 1932 Croydon, Alfred G born 1934, Surrey NE. Best bet on Frankie is 1940 Surrey NE

WEBB, Emma Rose (I3)

613 One of the witnesses was Edward Desborough, not clear who this is

At 1911 Census he records 9 children with 1 who has died
Family: Henry Herbert DAY / Ann IMPEY (F247)

614 Only baptisms I can find have him bapt 1738 or 1740 in Cheshire.... HOUGHTON, Benjamin (I471)

615 Other possible children for John (no wife mentioned), taken from IGI and parish records for Chittlehampton are
Alce (born 23/11/1653 and bapt 4/12/1653) - reasonable given John's assumed wife, but not given an earlier daughter below
Joane (bapt 17/12/1637). My reading of the orginal document is 7/12/1637(?)
Cannot find any other likely data for Chittlehampton.
SKYNNER, John (I645)

616 Parents are Thomas and Ellen.

Thomas and Ellen were, according to the 1861 Census, from Milton in Kent - this may be relevant in terms of the comments below. In 1861 Thomas's occupation is "Sargeant .......Police", but it it not obvious. When she gets married in 1889 he is a School Board Governor.
I cannot see him in 1871 but in 1881, he had remarried (Ellen had died) and he is a clerk.
There is a Metropolitan Police record stating that he resigned 10/12/1870 because of "bodily injury" - and his parents seem to match other information about him. This again says he was born in Milton.

Ellen says (or John believes) at the 1911 Census that she was born in Greenwich, maybe because of her parents birthplace. It is also the point at which John seems to stop being a grocer and then a coopers labourer, which might be seen as inferior. However I think the birthplace is a genuine mistake and we are dealing with the same person through all the Censuses.
IREMONGER, Ellen Elizabeth (I597)

617 Parents based on baptism info are Thomas and Sarah
Best match on death is Sept 1877 qtr, Medway vol 2a, p264 aged 63
HILL, Frances (I1132)

618 Parents given as Richard and Mary.

Note - there is another Jane DEAN baptised in Holdenhurst 9/10/1808 to Richard and Rebecca. Richard and Rebecca are 55 at the 1841 Census for Holdenhurst, and probably married 28 Jun or 2 Jul 1807 in Kingstone (Kingston?) according to IGI. There is no obvious way to decide between the two options.
The other Jane DEAN most probably married Robert TROKE in Holdenhurst 9/3/1837. It is conceivable that by tracking this Jane the identity of the parents will become obvious.
(Lastly note IGI has another Jane DEAN d of Robert who married at Buriton in 1837 but this is some distance from Holdenhurst).
In the 1871 Census for Jane and Robert TROKE (in Holdenhurst) is Louisa DEAN, a nephew. From the 1861 and other censusses she is the daughter or John and Louisa DEAN, ie John DEAN is the brother of Jane TROKE (nee DEAN) ( and is b abt 1823 in Christchurch). The best match by far to this is John Dean b 3/1/1823 to Robert and Jane (ADLEY) and bapt at Christchurch Aug 1823. This is therefore at variance with the baptism of Jane DEAN above.

Of course this is all relevant only if I have picked the wrong Jane DEAN. I still do not think there is clear evidnence for the parents of my Jane. I have picked the child of Richard and Mary on the slim evidence of birth date being better correlated to later censuses, and thus is not very conclusive.
DEAN, Jane (I1016)

619 Parents given in the baptism as Charles (a groom) and Elizabeth.

At his death, he was a "ticket examiner". The money went to Elizabeth who, at the probate date (1876) was living at 17, Clarence St., Gravesend
TOMS, George (I1013)

620 Parents given on the baptism transcript as James and Elizabeth
The Merchant Navy details from 1845 also say that he had a dark complexion, Brown hair, Hazel eyes, 5' 7.25" high. First went to sea as a boy in 1830, and served in the Royal Navy for 9 years.
Assuming he died between 1851 and 1861 there are several possibilities in the BMD records for East London.
HARDING, Thomas (I1047)

621 Parents were George William and Jane Elizabeth.

He is baptised Henry Herbert, but for most of his life he calls himself Herbert Henry. At the 1881 Census, he is a step son to Marian Day, a widow, so it is likely that he used the name Herbert sometime around his mother's death, or his father's remarriage, or indeed his father's death.
DAY, Henry Herbert (I444)

622 Parents were Henry and Joanne. At the 1851 Census, Henry is a Schoolmaster - general studies at Pottergate Street House Academy, about which I can not find much information. However having a father with education was probably beneficial.

Arthur married Mary HAMMOND 21/11/1869 at Great Yarmouth and then Winifred Ethel FISK 17/12/1917 at St Dunstans in the City of London.

In the 1868 Electoral Register he is at 23, Castle Meadow in Norwich, an Ironmongers Assistant, and again in 1870 (no details given).

On 18/5/1878, in the Northampton Mercury, he informs everybody that he has taken over the (Ironmonger) business of the late Joseph PORTER at 58 Bridge St. At the same time he advertises for an apprentice. On 29/3/1884, the business is put up for sale, and a report in the paper of 5/4/1884 says that he is bankrupt as of 29/2/1884.

While he died at a hospital in Brighton he gave his addresses as 138, Fetter Lane (cf John Jackman) and 14, Cliffords Inn in London
LING, Arthur (I674)

623 Parents were James and Elizabeth PARSONS, Hubert (I144)

624 Parents were Jasper and Ellen

Note, although the 1939 Register says she was born in 1883, the BMD index has it 1882, so the information has been corrected to 1882
VALE-LANE, Letitia Ethel Anne (I622)

625 Parents were John (a shoemaker) and Mary SMALE, Edith Maud (I125)

626 Parents were John and Ann.

There are 3 possible burials for a Joan Jackman (or similar spellings) in or near South Tawton, and these are possibly the results for other Joans in this family tree:-
Joane - 1741
Jane - 1754
Joan -1770.
There does not seem to be any reason for picking one rather than the other, apart from perhaps age.
PIDLAR, Joan (I652)

627 Parents were John and Maria.

The burial register says she lived at Northland St...this is assumed to be Northlands St.
ROUSON, Caroline (I331)

628 Parents were John and Sarah CHAMBERLAIN, Sarah (I170)

629 Parents were Joshua and Alice SHARP, Philip Joshua (I147)

630 Parents were Robert and Frances.

Noted a number of sea trips to South America in the 1930's, always with her husband (a Merchant). She is called "housewife". This is probably why she is on her own at the 1939 Register.
WELLS, Anna Louise (I1180)

631 Parents were Smith and Elizabeth ALDRIDGE, Edward (I258)

632 Parents were Thomas and Louisa.

Cannot find any info on him in 1939 Census or indeed in WW1 records. There is a possible Rose Clark, widowed, living at 30 Puller Road in Hemel Hempstead, so this might be his wife, especially as there are internet sites that appear to have his daughter as Daisy, and she features in the same 1939 Register. Lastly Puller Road is where other family members have lived
CLARK, Thomas Walter (I85)

633 Parents were Thomas and Mary

At the baptism of his children, John described himself as a Saddler or Harness Maker (?).
WILKEY, John (I768)

634 Parents were Thomas, a shoemaker, and Ann SAYERS, Agnes Ann Frances (I641)

635 Parents were William and Elizabeth

Disappointingly Maria does not say in the 1911 Census how many children alive and dead.....Maybe it was too stressful
BUTCHER, Maria Martha (I1027)

636 Parents were William and Elizabeth based on early Census and baptism.

George was a carpenter when he got married in 1851, then a builder at the 1861 Census. It is interesting to note that James Guy, his father in law was also a carpenter in 1851 and a builder in 1861. His father William is a victualler on George's marriage certificate, which is maybe why that is what George was doing in 1871.

George is listed as the licensee of the Great Western Tavern from 1865 to 1875

His spinster daughter Ellen is executor, so Ann maybe has died?
NOTTING, George (I1258)

637 Parents were William and Mary

The 1861 Census has her as "Ann", but the surname is not common, and the other details match, so this is assumed to be a typo
FRYE, Amy (I1159)

638 Parents were William and Susannah HOPKINS, Arthur Johnson (I481)

639 Percy marries Celia V HARMER Apr qtr 1933 in Shoreditch (and she appears on the 1939 Register, born 5/10/1910, with "GREENGRASS" as surname). There are 2 children in the 1939 Register, only the second of which is open - Janet, born 19/2/1938.

It is possible he marries again - Monica STUBBS Oct qtr 1960 in Yarmouth

Internet sources suggest he died 26/2/1999 at Gorleston, Norfolk
BIRD, Percy George Robert (I111)

640 Peter appears on the electoral roll in 1869, which is consistent with Skyles (a farmer) dieing in 1868... it is possible that Peter got his farm. Peter was the only child mentioned in the probate. JUNIPER, Peter (I987)

641 Peter was in Taverham (circa 12 miles away) when he married.

This story is probable but not certain.
The burial at Mundesley is fairly likely given where he had moved, and the family nearby. This gives an age which then leads us to his baptism in Walcott, about 10 miles from where he married. It is on the coast, so if his father was a boat man of some description then it matches. This then identifies his parents.

In addition, there is some uncertainty about his marriage, as a number of documents exist for Peter JUNIPER and Susan(nah) GALES. This might imply 2 different but similar couples, but it seems marginally less likely than the story presented here.

I was hoping to find that Henry JUNIPER (who married Mary and lived and died in Horning) would be a brother, but this seems unlikely.

There is an auction announced for 4pm on 11 June 1807 of
"A VERY desirable ESTATE, at Mundesley and Paston, in Norfolk, comprising a farm-house, two cottages, barn, stable, and twenty-one acres of land, of the first quality, in the occupation of Mr. Peter Juniper and others, and of which possession may be had a Michaelmas next".
There are other Junipers, but this is consistent with somebody perhaps wanting to sell up. Skyles, his son is obviously wealthy, perhaps through this inheritance, though it is still unclear where Peter's money came from.

Peter Juniper also appears to have been the proprietor (or perhaps owner??) of the Ship Inn in Mundesley, from 1802 to maybe his death in 1836. His grandson Robert, was licensee from 1845 to 1869, and then his son William Skyles (certainly in the 1871 and 1881 Census he is), and following William's death, maybe 25/5/1900, his wife Jane (LEA) took over until it left the family with George Rich in 1901.
JUNIPER, Peter (I947)

642 Peter was obviously a successful businessman.

There appear to be a number of sale items for which he was an agent. For instance
"To be LETT, and entered upon immediately, - The WHITE HART PUBLIC HOUSE, at Powlner [Poulner], near Ringwood, Hants. Enquire of Mr Peter Vey, at Ringwood" (Salisbury and Winchester Journal, 19 Jan 1801).
"HAY. TO be SOLD, at Ringwood, - A RICK of GOOD MEADOW HAY, about Twenty-five TONS. Apply to Peter Vey, there." (Salisbury and Winchester Journal, 8 June 1807).
"TO be SOLD, - FIFTY TONS of good MEADOW HAY, and delivered any where within twelve miles of Ringwood. Apply to Mr Peter Vey, at Ringwood.
WANTED to KEEP, till Lady-day next, - One hundred SHEEP, or about Fifty Couples, with plenty of good hay and turnips. Apply as above." (Salisbury and Winchester Journal, 27 Jan 1812).
"TO be LET, and may be entered upon at Lady-day next, - The CROWN INN at Ringwood, being a well-established House, with good Posting Business, and now in full trade. - For full particulars apply to Mr Peter Vey, at Ringwood." (Salisbury and Winchester Journal, 20 March 1815).

In the 1830s Pigot's directory he was a wine and spirits at West St. in Ringwood.

His death announcement in Aug 1832 said
"Died, on Thursday, the 16th Inst., at Ringwood, in the 77th year of his age, Mr Peter Vey, whose peaceable deportment and exemplary piety through life did honour to the religion that he professed."
VEY, Peter (I1009)

643 Poss birth 7/12/1812 Bapt 27/12/1812 or
birth 2/2/1812, bapt 16/2/1812.

Best found so far is son of John and Elizabeth, born 18/6/1811 bapt St James Islington 21/4/1812. Given the lack of obvious George Charles's and the match with the father, this is taken to be the right record, though TAYLOR is clearly a common name, and in addition the fact that he appears to have been born in the workhouse would mean that John was not doing well. This does match some information which suggests that watchmaking, at least in London was less busy.

At the marriage in 1842, he is living in Pear Tree Court, which matches the baptism records of his children. At the 1850 marriage, he is living at 2, Church Row, Bethnal Green.

Although I can find no record of an earlier marriage, I still wonder if there was one and that James, Sarah and Mary were born to a different "Sarah Ann"

The reference to capenter at Elizabeth's marriage is potentially significant as this would mean that this individual, with all the associated family information is not the George who is Elizabeth's father. However I can find no George TAYLOR who describes himself as a carpenter, or anything similar with a daughter named Elizabeth born 1841-1848 in the 1851 Census. There are of course other possibilities, including those where Elizabeth is somewhere else at the census and mistakes in the census, but on balance I think the occupation description at Elizabeth's marriage is wrong and this is the right person to be Elizabeth's father.
TAYLOR, George Charles (I16)

644 Possible Ann PALLANT bapt 25/11/1777 in Hitcham, Suffolk, d of John and Mary (taken from IGI).

Anne COCKSEDGE (b1777), wife of Henry, is buried 29/11/1832

Previously I had Anne marrying William COCKSEDGE. This is because there is an identical IGI record for Henry, but with a father William. The disadvantage is that the marriage is about 4-5 months before Henry was born, and it is in a location about 3 miles away. But these are not thought to be significant and the transcription with Henry born to William is assumed to be a mistake.
PALLANT, Anne (I339)

645 Possible baptism 10/9/1847 at Chapel Royal, Brighton. Names are all correct but limited connection with Brighton (though Edmund is there at the 1861 Census).

Burial etc is also not completely certain but sufficiently definite to include in the tree.
HARDING, Edmund Frederick (I1197)

646 Possible baptism 14/9/1817, Petworth, son of James and Rhoda SMART, Jane (I325)

647 Possible birth details are too numerous to be clear which is right. The best options appear to be in Buckinghamshire - Little Missinden or Wendover or Wingrave PAYNE, Ann (I190)

648 possible burial at Holy Trinity, West Lulworth, on 24/12/1793, but this could be his son William....

There are a number of internet trees that suggest he was born, lived or married in Chickerell. Given that this is about 15 miles on foot from West Lulworth, and given that there appears to be no reference to William Randall in Chickerell close to his marriage or the baptism of one of his children, it is assumed that this is a different person, albeit possibly a cousin.

Some sites suggest he was in West Lulworth in Sept 1769, but it is not clear what this is for.

An alternative possibility is a marriage at St Peter's Dorchester to Brdiget REASON on 28/1/1768. The transcript notes that he comes from West Lulworth, so it is a possibility.

The site www.westlulworth.org.uk has a number of genealogical transcripts which need to be reviewed.
RANDALL, William (I1076)

649 Possible burial record 2/12/1851 at Bovington aged 73 FREEMAN, Thomas (I75)

650 Possible burial Southwark 8/3/1887 JACKMAN, Sarah (I716)
